Kansas City shooting: Worlds of Fun evacuated after report of active shooter; park to remain closed this evening

An active shooting incident was reported at Worlds of Fun on Saturday, September 13, prompting the evacuation of the theme park, according to a Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) report provided to KCTV, a local television station.

Police confirmed the situation began when a person alerted an off-duty officer after hearing what sounded like gunshots around 9:10 pm CT inside the park. Due to the size of the crowd, KCPD and surrounding agencies responded quickly. While on the scene, officers also had to break up multiple disturbances involving juveniles engaged in fights.

The amusement park posted that they are working with the Kansas City police, and “the park will remain closed this evening.”

Authorities later confirmed that no serious injuries or fatalities had been reported, and no weapon was recovered, leaving police unable to determine the origin of the noise that was described by the complainant as resembling a gunshot.
