Josh Hutcherson opens up about Swiftie backlash: “That is why I don’t want to be online”
It started as a simple opinion during an interview, but it quickly spiraled into something much bigger. Actor Josh Hutcherson recently shared how speaking honestly about his music preferences led to intense online backlash. The response, largely from fans of Taylor Swift, left a lasting impression on him. Now, he’s explaining why that moment pushed him further away from social media.

Why did Josh Hutcherson’s comment spark backlash?

During a past interview with i-D magazine, Josh Hutcherson was asked about Taylor Swift. His response was straightforward: “Oh no, I’m definitely not a Swiftie.”

That brief remark ended up drawing strong reactions online. Speaking later to GQ on April 20, the actor explained how quickly things escalated, as per a report by People.

“I got some heat because [of that]... All of a sudden, it garnered this. He’s a monster! Destroy him! He’s short! He hates her because he’s short! ”Hutcherson recalled.

He made it clear the criticism caught him off guard, especially since his comment wasn’t meant to be harsh. As he put it, “It’s just like, 'Whoa! I think she’s great. Her music is not my kind of music."

How did online reactions impact him?

The wave of negativity left a lasting impression. For Hutcherson, it wasn’t just about criticism—it was the intensity and personal nature of it that stood out.

“That is why I don’t want to be online,” he said. “I don’t need that energy.”

The situation also became more complicated because fans pointed out that he had attended Swift’s Eras Tour in 2024 as a VIP. He had even been seen receiving friendship bracelets, which added to the confusion among fans.

Despite the backlash, there’s still a connection between the two through The Hunger Games, where Swift contributed the song “Safe and Sound.”

Why does he prefer staying offline now?

Beyond the immediate reaction, Hutcherson explained that being widely recognized online can affect his work as an actor, as per a report by People.

“The Studio” star said that too much visibility can make it harder for audiences to separate him from his roles.

“It’s counterintuitive to my job, because if people know you more, you can’t disappear into characters,” he explained. “They see you as, ‘Oh, that’s Josh.’ You know what I mean?”

He added that internet fame, especially when tied to memes or viral moments, can overshadow the craft of acting. “So, if you’re a meme, people know you for the meme.”

Away from the noise, Hutcherson continues to keep parts of his personal life private. He has occasionally spoken about his relationship with actress Claudia Traisac, describing the unpredictable nature of their schedules.

“In my life and relationship, because we're both actors, it's very hot and cold as far as how much time we get together,” he said in a previous interview with PEOPLE. “It's a hard thing to find balance in.”

Still, he sees a positive side to that unpredictability, calling it “exciting” and part of what makes their relationship work.
