Jose Altuve signs contract with Houston Astros; to get $125 million for 2025-29

Jose Altuve and the Houston Astros have inked a significant deal, agreeing on a five-year contract extension worth $125 million, covering the years 2025 to 2029.

The announcement of Altuve's new multiyear agreement was made by Houston on Tuesday, although the financial specifics were not disclosed.

Previously, Altuve had been playing under a seven-year contract totaling $163.5 million, with a final season salary of $26 million for 2024. This extension comes ahead of his eligibility for free agency after the upcoming World Series.


As part of the new deal, Altuve will receive a $15 million signing bonus, contingent upon Major League Baseball's approval of the contract, as revealed by a source familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press.

Under the terms of the extension, Altuve will earn annual salaries of $30 million from 2025 to 2027, followed by $10 million each for the years 2028 and 2029.

Altuve, a three-time batting champion and the recipient of the 2017 AL MVP award, has been a pivotal player for the Astros, boasting a career marked by impressive statistics. Despite facing injury setbacks, such as breaking his left thumb during the World Baseball Classic in 2023, Altuve returned to the field to contribute significantly to the team's success.

His achievements include aiding the Astros in securing their first two World Series titles in 2017 and 2022, and he was honored as the Male Athlete of the Year in 2017.

With this extension, Altuve becomes the first second baseman in baseball history to surpass $300 million in career earnings, solidifying his status as one of the game's highest-paid players.
