Plot

The story begins with Arthur Fleck in Arkham Asylum, awaiting his trial. Harvey Dent is the prosecutor in the case. Arthur meets another patient, Lee Quinzel. She is a fan of the Joker and encourages Arthur to stop taking his medication. Lee claims she was forcibly committed by her mother and lived in the same area as Arthur.

As Arthur's trial begins, Lee attends every day. Arthur’s lawyer warns him that Lee has been lying about her background. She is from a wealthy family, and she committed herself voluntarily after attending psychiatry school. Arthur eventually fires his lawyer and defends himself in court, appearing as the Joker in full clown makeup.

Lee Quinzel gradually becomes Harley Quinn, adopting a more colorful appearance. However, Arthur grows tired of his Joker persona. He renounces it during the trial, causing Lee to leave him. The courthouse is bombed by Arthur’s followers, but Arthur manages to escape. He meets Lee, but their relationship has deteriorated. Lee no longer wants to be with him, and her pregnancy appears to be a lie. She sings to Arthur before leaving him.
