After reaching a settlement in their most recent round of litigation, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp managed to avoid yet another court appearance. Depp first sued Heard for defamation in March 2019, following the publication of an op-ed in the Washington Post in which Heard referred to herself as a "public figure who symbolizes domestic abuse."

The pair divorced in 2017 after two years of marriage.

A Virginia jury determined earlier this year that Depp and Heard had disparaged one another after a drawn-out trial. Heard through the op-publication, ed's and Depp through a statement from his lawyer, in which Heard was charged with committing a "hoax."

Heard was sentenced to pay Depp $5 million in punitive damages and $10 million in compensatory damages, with the latter amount being reduced to $350,000 to stay inside the bounds of a statutory cap. Depp was mandated to give Heard $2,000,000.

Heard's attorney cited 'errors' committed by the court in a notice of appeal that was submitted the following month by Heard. The "Aquaman" actor appears to have conceded to withdraw her appeal, though.

Heard criticized the American legal system for using her testimony as "entertainment and social media fodder" and stated emphatically that: There were no constraints or gags with respect to her voice moving forward.

She then likened the U.S. court system to the British one, where Depp had filed a lawsuit against The Sun in 2020 after the publication called him a "wife beater" in an article. Heard served as The Sun's lead witness. In that instance, the judge ruled in favour of The Sun and deemed the accusations to be "basically true".
