John Lewis unveils its 2023 Christmas Advert
It's only November, but the Christmas TV adverts are already making their way to our screens, spreading holiday cheer. The latest festive message comes from the renowned brand John Lewis.

This year's John Lewis Christmas advert, released on Thursday, tells an unusual and somewhat divisive story. It centers around a little boy and a gigantic Venus flytrap. The advert received mixed opinions on social media, with some finding it "scary," while others appreciated the light-heartedness it offered.

The story unfolds as young Alfie purchases a seed from a shop owner who, it turns out, he wasn't entirely honest. He believed the seed would grow into a Christmas tree, but to his surprise, it sprouts into a carnivorous Venus flytrap he names Snapper. The plant's attempt to devour Alfie's dog leads to its eviction to the garden. The Venus flytrap, banished from Christmas festivities but within sight, experiences a full-scale emotional meltdown. In a change of heart, Alfie's family brings Snapper some presents, which he proceeds to eat and then regurgitate at the family. The advert concludes with an uneasy truce.

John Lewis opted for a departure from last year's theme that reflected the cost of living crisis. Instead, this year's ad focuses on family and evolving traditions, emphasizing that it's not the tradition itself that matters but how it brings together families and loved ones.

The accompanying music for the advert is "Festa," performed by the renowned opera singer Andrea Bocelli. The storyline combines elements from various past John Lewis Christmas adverts, featuring the anticipation of Christmas, an unlikely friendship, a disruptive creature causing chaos, and ultimately, forgiveness and unity.

The theme for this year's Christmas adverts across the board seems to lean towards glitz, fame, and fun.
