Jill Biden compares Latinos to Tacos, slammed for stereotyping Hispanics

The First Lady of the United States, Jill Biden, has created a new controversy by comparing Latinos to Tacos. In her speech on Monday, Jill compared the diversity of the Latin American people to the “uniqueness of breakfast tacos.”

Jill’s comments came while addressing UnidoUS, a progressive Latino NPO in San Antonio, Texas. The first lady stated that the group’s former president, Raul Yzaguirre, built UnidosUS with diversity as a priority. While commenting on it, Jill said that the diversity of the Latino community was as distinct and beautiful as the Bronx’s bodegas and Miami’s blossoms. She further said that the Latino community’s uniqueness is like the breakfast tacos of San Antonio.

Her comments have attracted scathing criticism from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). The group said in an official statement that the comparison of Latinos with tacos indicates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity on the part of Jill. The statement further read that the NAHJ wants Jill Biden and her speech writing team to take time to read and develop a better understanding of the complexities of Latino communities.


NAHJ reiterated that the Latino community wasn't tacos and that the Hispanic heritage was shaped by several diasporas, cultures, and traditions. The group further urged Jill not to stereotype Latinos.

The Republicans were quick to grab the opportunity and unleashed an attack on social media. Arizona Rep. Andy Bigg tweeted that Jill Biden’s “Hispanics are as unique as tacos” indicates why Hispanics were leaving the Democratic Party. On the other hand, UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguia said that she was honored to host Jill Biden. Janet also said that Jill has been a great friend and educator for the Latino community and that she felt lucky to be Jill’s friend.
