Flights were temporarily grounded at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on Thursday(October 30) afternoon after an aircraft arriving from Puerto Rico declared an emergency, according to aviation‑tracker data and public reports. All departures from the airport were halted until the ground stop was lifted, resulting in significant travel disruptions for passengers. JFK ranks among the world’s busiest airports, handling a record 63.3 million passengers in 2024 alone.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the ground stop went into effect at 12:30 pm ET and remained in place until 1:45 pm. Authorities from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that the emergency occurred aboard Frontier Airlines Flight 3546, which was arriving from San Juan.

According to flight-tracking website Flightradar24, Flight 3546 issued a code 7700, a general emergency signal used for medical issues, aircraft problems, or other urgent situations requiring priority attention.

According to the Daily Mail, the flight’s captain declared the emergency as a precaution after encountering a mechanical issue while approaching JFK.

The Port Authority confirmed that the aircraft landed safely at 12:50 pm, with no injuries reported on board. A Frontier spokesperson added that Flight 3546 is currently undergoing an evaluation to determine the cause of the mechanical issue.

Flight 3546 departed San Juan at 9:04 am without incident and, due to the emergency, landed approximately 15 minutes ahead of schedule, according to Flightradar24. Frontier Airlines stated that passengers affected by the emergency, or those booked on the same aircraft, will be accommodated on alternate flights.

Adverse weather has compounded disruptions across the New York area. High winds and low cloud ceilings have already caused delays exceeding four hours at JFK, where the FAA has announced a ground delay in effect until midnight. Nearby airports have also been impacted:

LaGuardia issued a ground stop until 4 pm, and Newark Liberty International halted operations until 3:45 pm Thunderstorms and poor flying conditions have pushed average delays at both airports to around three hours, with over 100 combined flight cancellations reported at JFK and LaGuardia, according to FlightAware.
