Jets Owner Woody Johnson Blocks Jerry Jeudy Trade Over Madden Rating, Sources Reveal

Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets, has been rumoured to have blocked a trade of Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, perhaps as a result of being swayed by the wide receivers' Madden video game score.

In a shocking twist to the New York Jets' offseason trade talks, it has been revealed that team owner Woody Johnson vetoed a trade for Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy because he felt Jeudy’s Madden video game rating “wasn’t high enough". According to sources from The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, Dianna Russini, and Michael Silver, the decision stemmed from the influence of Johnson’s teenage sons, Brick and Jack, who reportedly played a significant role in his decision-making.

Madden Ratings Influencing Decisions?

Johnson’s decision to veto the trade was reportedly influenced by his sons’ opinions, especially after he started involving them in team discussions after returning from his role as the U.K. ambassador. One Jets executive said that during meetings, Woody Johnson would sometimes cite opinions his sons read online, giving them equal weight to professional executives’ advice. The incident involving Jeudy, who had an 83 overall rating in Madden NFL 24, highlights the bizarre nature of these influences.

The Jets had proposed trading wide receiver Allen Lazard and a 2024 draft selection with the Broncos for Jeudy, however, Johnson's veto put a stop to the deal. Jeudy which has since accumulated more than 1,000 yards receiving this season, was then traded to the Cleveland Browns. With an 83 rating Jeudy would have been the Jets' second-rated receiver (after Garrett Wilson, who had 84).
The vetoed trade for Jeudy comes amid a challenging season for the Jets, who are sitting at a 4-10 record going into Week 16.
