Jersey explosion: One killed, several missing after blast at St Helier flat block

An explosion took place in Jersey's block of flats. One person is reported to be killed, and a dozen people are reported missing. Two survivors were taken to the St Helier Hospital on Pier Road around 4:00 GMT.

Search parties are looking for the missing people. Robin Smith, the Chief of Police, told the reporters that the search could take several days. He also added that the site of the explosion is still a danger. His staff is facing threats with a brave heart.

Robin Smith mentioned that the exact extent of the explosion has not yet been determined, but a complete three-story building collapsed.

The Fire Department visited the site before the explosion because someone called in a gas leak.

The Emergency Services released the fire and are now trying to locate victims in the rubble. But still, some pockets of fires are discovered during the search for victims. They are using all available resources to find the missing people.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, the Urban Search and Rescue Team from Hampshire, and the South West Hazardous Area Response Team arrived on the site to help with the crisis.

The Government of Jersey said that a Chinook helicopter containing special equipment would land at the Jersey Airport around 16:00 GMT.

Anthony Abbott, a survivor of the explosion, shared his experience with the press. He and his wife heard the explosion and got up to find debris in their flat. The windows were also blown in. They had children with them. Mr. Abbott helped his family and neighbors to get down the stairs and out of the building. He is very thankful that his family is unharmed.
