Jeffrey Sachs Slams Donald Trump’s Trade Tactics
Speaking to a packed international audience, Sachs compared the logic behind Trump’s tariffs to the absurdity of expecting balanced accounts with your local supermarket, according to the report. He had said at that time that, "The set of tariffs that Trump announced last week - and that caused a financial bloodbath - are not coming back. We won't hear those numbers again. They were improvised, absurd, and so basic that you wouldn't accept them in a first-semester, third-week economics class," as quoted by Aldia News.

Economist Mocking Trump's Tariff Logic
Sachs openly mocked the US president’s earlier claim that the United States had been "ripped off" economically for decades as he responded to Trump’s previously made remarks about trade deficits and global economic exploitation, as reported by Times Now.The economist responded, saying, "If you take your credit card and go shopping and you run up a large credit card debt, you’re running a trade deficit, with all those shops," adding, “It would be pretty strange then if you blame all the shop owners for having sold you all those things. ‘You’re ripping me off, you’re ripping me off.’ That is the level of the understanding of the President of the United States,” as quoted in the Times Now report.
He explained that, “The trade deficit does not represent at all trade policies. It represents spending relative to production or earnings. We call that an identity. I teach it on the second day of my course in international monetary economics. Trump never made it to the second day,” as quoted in the report.
The economist highlighted that the US trade deficit is not evidence of other countries “cheating,” but rather a reflection of America’s own tendency to spend more than it earns, saying, “He says, ‘You’re running a trade deficit and look, they’re all cheating me.’ But all that’s happening is that the United States is outspending its national income,” as quoted in the Times Now report.
Jeffrey Sachs Warns of Misleading Narratives
Sachs even pointed out that "Trump is offering a false explanation to Midwestern states that lost manufacturing jobs, largely not because of trade but because of automation. Instead of promoting investment or job retraining policies, he is selling a trade war with China and other countries as a magic bullet," as quoted in the report.FAQs
What was Sachs's main point about the trade deficit? He explained that trade deficits reflect spending more than earning, not other countries cheating or ripping off the US, as per the Times Now report.
Does Sachs believe tariffs are economically justified?
No. He said they’re being used for political gain, not for real economic benefit.
