Jeffrey Archer, the best-selling novelist, and former politician, recalled accompanying a depressed Diana when she announced her retirement from public life a year after her divorce from Charles.

There are moments in life that are so pivotal that we know history is written as it passes. The magnificent solemnity of the Queen's burial. Princess Diana's untimely death. Even her divorce from Prince Charles, which allowed Camilla to become Queen Consort, was historic.

Archer remembered how later that evening, she told him she'd watched TV alone with a tray of food on her lap and how, had he known, he'd have offered company for supper. He told Mary (his wife) that he would always regret not asking her; that she had spent that night alone.
