Jeff Bezos defended the Washington Post’s decision of not endorsing a single US Presidential candidate just ahead of the US Presidential Elections scheduled to be held on November 5 while he asserted that political endorsements eventually creates a perception of bias. According to New York Post, in an op-ed which was recently published, Jeff Bezos described the move as a principal decision which eventually reflects the commitment of the newspaper towards independence.

New York Post reported that Jeff Bezos also made an argument that endorsements do not really influence undecided voters and emphasized on the need for media credibility acknowledging the fact that public trust in journalism has eventually declined.

The decision of not endorsing any Presidential candidates has sparked a huge controversy within Washington Post which led to near about 200,000 readers cancelling their digital subscriptions while prompting numerous resignations among the staff members as well. New York Post noted that the editorial board of Washington Post had reportedly prepared an endorsement for US Vice President Kamala Harris before the decision was eventually reversed.

CEO of Washington Post Will Lewis characterized this shift as a return to the historical practice of the paper of not endorsing any Presidential candidates while emphasizing on the trust in reader’s ability to make informed decisions.
