Jasmin Open 2022: Elise Mertens charged past Alizé Cornet to claim her first title in Tunisia

Elise Mertens won the year's opening match, beating Alizé Cornet of France in straight sets at the inaugural Jasmin Open on Sunday. Mertens sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-0 against Alizé Cornet.

Belgium's Elise Mertens defeated France's Alizé Cornet to secure her season's first title at the inaugural Jasmin Open on Sunday.

Mertens seized her seventh career title after the 80-minute match by winning 11 games in a row to close out the victory. Mertens advances 3-2 in her head-to-head against Cornet with a historic win.

Former World No. 12 Elise Mertens, who had only reached the quarterfinals twice in 2022 before coming to Monastir and losing both times, was able to turn around her season by winning the first Hologic WTA Tour event in Tunisia.

Mertens defeated Kaia Kanepi in the final of the Melbourne Gippsland Trophy in February of last year, marking her first championship victory since then. This week was her first major public appearance since last April in Istanbul.

After saving two break opportunities in a hold for 2-2, Mertens seized control of the match when she converted her fourth break point to take a 3-2 lead in the next game. Serving for the first set victory, Mertens got a second break and a 5-2 lead after winning a rally with an overhead smash.

After Cornet crashed an overhead into the net, Mertens went up 3-0 in the second set thanks to a break point gained on an unbelievably angled pass. With a volley winner, Elise Mertens extended her advantage to 5-0 after only two games, and she went on to win the match and the trophy with a simple love hold in the last game.
