Have you ever wanted to give up because progress seemed too slow? What if the thing that feels impossible today simply needs more time, effort and persistence?

A Japanese proverb offers a reminder that patience can change even the hardest situations. Sometimes, staying with something long enough is what makes the difference.

Japanese proverb of the day: ‘Three years on a stone’.

What this proverb means

石の上にも三年 (ishi no ue ni mo san nen) literally means “three years on a stone.” The phrase is derived from the situation where a person sits on a stone for a very long time until his body heats up the stone, after three years. The ‘three years’ should not be taken as literally since it means spending enough time with something until some changes are noticed.

The true meaning of this proverb is that even if things have tough starts, they are not doomed to failure. A new job or learning a new skill can be difficult at first, but one will reap fruits out of it by continuing the process with patience.

Significance of the proverb in real life

In the workplace, the expression can be useful if you find that you are finding it difficult adjusting to a new assignment or responsibility. Instead of having high expectations, being patient, making mistakes, and learning from them will give you an opportunity to make something new into a strength. The same rule also applies in case you are learning a language, acquiring a skill or working towards achieving a goal.
