Japan to boost its strike capability, defence budget. See details

Japan has approved a new national security strategy this week, which includes a pledge to have the potential to "counterstrike" to deter enemy strikes and boost investment to take a more aggressive position and increase its resilience in the face ...

The new strategy marks a significant departure for Japan, which has relied only on self-defence since the end of World War II. A look at how Japan's defensive stance will change due to the country's new security and military policy.

The ability to counterattack

The most significant change brought on by Japan's "ability to counterattack is crucial. Japan's goal is to have the ability to "disrupt and destroy assaults against its nation substantially early and at a larger distance" during the next decade."

The budget for defence has doubled

By 2027, Japan plans to have spent 43 trillion yen, or around 2% of its GDP, on the military. Japan's new spending goal is 10 trillion yen, which is comparable to the annual budgets of the United States and China.

Cybersecurity

Some experts feel that Japan will have to rely heavily on the United States because of its superior cybersecurity and intelligence skills if it wants to launch long-range cruise missiles to predetermined targets successfully.

Gigantic missile strikes

It is estimated that Japan will spend over 5 trillion yen on long-range missiles over the next five years. While the US develops the Tomahawk and the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile, a Japanese firm, Mitsubishi, will modify and mass-produce the Type-12 surface-to-ship guided missile. Japanese defence authorities have said that negotiations are ongoing to purchase Tomahawk missiles.
