Veteran political strategist James Carville has shared his perspective on which Democrat he believes has the strongest chance of winning the White House in the 2028 presidential election.
He offered his views during a recent episode of Raymond Arroyo’s show Arroyo Grande, Carville was asked directly which Democrat he could watch “carrying the flag” for the party heading into the next election cycle. His answers were direct.
Carville Quickly Dismisses Several High-Profile Democrats
When former Vice President Kamala Harris was cited, Carville dismissed the concept outright. He provided the same reaction when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was held up. However, when Arroyo referenced former U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel, Carville indicated Emanuel could still have a role, forecasting that “he’ll have an effect on the dialogue.”From there, Carville described that his thinking is driven by two certain requirements he believes are important for a Democratic nominee.
The Two Criteria Carville Says Matter Most
According to Carville, a strong Democratic candidate must first be able to raise a huge amount of funds early in the campaign. Second, that candidate must be able to walk into a Black establishment and receive a warm reception. As per the fundraising ability alone, Carville narrowed the list to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. When factoring in acceptance within Black communities, however, only one contender remained.
Why JB Pritzker Emerged as the Favorite
The talks then turned to Pritzker, initiating a candid exchange between Carville and Arroyo:CARVILLE: If I had to say one guy — I really don’t know him very superficially — but if I were like betting the Kentucky Derby and I saw this 12-to-1 horse and I said, “Yeah, I want to get a price,” I’d take JB Pritzker.
CARVILLE: Well–
ARROYO: Not Kamala Harris? She’s Black!
CARVILLE: She has no chance.
CARVILLE: Because no Democrat wants anything to do with anybody that had anything to do with 2024. Not that we dislike them. This is not what we’re doing. And I don’t think there’s no enthusiasm. I mean, look, if you do a poll and you say for 2028, it’s Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, any name they heard of. Well, the person they heard of is always going to be on, but that’s meaningless.
ARROYO: That doesn’t mean anything.
Carville’s View on the 2024 Fallout
Carville mentioned his belief that Democrats are eager to move previous figures connected with the 2024 election loss.“No Democrat wants anything to do with anybody that had anything to do with 2024,” he said.
“Not that we dislike them — that’s not what this is. There’s no enthusiasm.”
He also rejected the value of familiarity-driven polling, stating:
“If you do a poll and you say for 2028 it’s Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, any name they’ve heard of, the person they’ve heard of is always going to be on top. But that’s meaningless.”
How Other Democrats Compare
Carville admitted that Newsom and Shapiro could also offer significant early fundraising, but said neither matched Pritzker’s blend offend , visibility, and grassroots acceptance. While Carville continues to be skeptical, Harris now leads early polling, followed by Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Ocasio-Cortez.
