Jailscraper has been planned to contain around 40 storey, with its height approximately close to the iconic Empire State Building or the Big Ben, say reports. However, Chinatown locals are insisting that this project not be continued as the region has a rich heritage and they do not wish to reside in an area where thousands of prisoners are lodged in within a few yards of their residency.

Old-age citizens mainly residing near the prison complex in Chinatown, raising concerns

One concerning issue that is being highlighted is the fact that there are nearly 60,000 people living in Chinatown but almost a third of those residing near the Jailscraper complex, are aged 65 years or older, posing a risk for them. Petitions around reconsidering this billion-dollar prison project have been signed by more than 12,000 people, a drive that was organized by an organization named Welcome To Chinatown.


According to locals in the area, Chinatown has been plagued by jails, which included the infamous 'Tombs', that was a set of four buildings that formed a prison complex in the same area where the Skyscraper is being planned. The Tombs were bulldozed to set the stage for the new mega-prison, which is destined to serve as an alternative to the infamous Rikers, known for containing some known and notorious criminals.
