Italian bear Juan Carrito dies in car accident

Rare brown Italian bear named Juan Carrito is no more. The three-year-old Marsican bear had become famous for his visits to small mountain villages in the Abruzzo region. The bear was killed after being hit by a car in the town of Castel di Sangro on Monday afternoon.

Juan Carrito had become a beloved figure in the region and his death has deeply affected the local community. Many people had grown accustomed to seeing him wandering around the villages and had come to view him as a kind of unofficial mascot. Juan Carrito, the famous Marsican bear, had become known for his frequent visits to populated areas, particularly the ski resort town of Roccaraso. Despite attempts to rewild him, he continued to make bold excursions into the town. In late 2021, he broke into a bakery and ate a batch of fresh biscuits. He was also frequently spotted drinking from a fountain, sleeping among pine trees, and scavenging through bins for food such as leftover pizza and sandwiches.


After his biscuit heist, Carrito was captured and relocated to a remote area in the mountains. However, he eventually returned and was captured again in March of the following year and placed in an enclosure. Despite this attempt to rewild him, it was unsuccessful and Carrito once again returned to Roccaraso where he was seen on a ski slope just earlier this month.

Luciano D’Alfsono, a representative of the Democratic party, expressed his sadness at the news of Carrito's death, stating that it was a loss for the entire region of Abruzzo. He also highlighted Carrito's memorable "irreverent and free nature" that will be remembered by the people of Abruzzo.

The death of Carrito also sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with many expressing their sadness and sharing personal stories of encounters with the beloved bear. "Juan was one of us," one commenter on Twitter wrote, reflecting the sentiment that Carrito had become a cherished member of the community.
