In a significant escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Palestinian militants initiated a 'war' on Saturday, involving rocket attacks and infiltration into Israel. Here are the latest developments:

'Operation Al-Aqsa Flood' Unleashed

The conflict commenced with multiple rocket launches from different locations within the Palestinian territory, prompting air raid sirens across southern and central Israel. The armed wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks, asserting that thousands of rockets had been launched. Israeli forces reported an attempted seizure of an Israeli tank during the chaos. Air raid sirens were activated in Israel, urging people to seek shelter in bomb shelters. Israeli air defense systems successfully intercepted multiple rockets. Hamas declared "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood" and claimed to have launched over 5,000 rockets within the initial 20 minutes.

Mayor of Israeli Town Among Casualties

Tragically, the head of the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council, Ofir Liebstein, lost his life in the deadly rocket fire launched by Hamas, as reported by The Times of Israel. The report indicated that "Ofir was killed when he went to defend a town during the terrorist attack." Following Liebstein's death, the deputy head of the Council, Yossi Keren, assumed interim leadership. Regrettably, four other individuals have also been reported killed in the attack so far.

Declaration of War by Israeli Prime Minister

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unequivocally declared that Israel is now in a state of 'war' with Hamas militants who control the Gaza Strip. In a televised address, Netanyahu emphasized that he had initiated the mobilization of reservists and pledged that Hamas would face unprecedented consequences. He stated, "We are at war," underscoring that it is not merely an 'operation' or a 'round' but a full-fledged war.

Additionally, he issued orders for the military to retake towns that had been infiltrated by Hamas militants, where ongoing gunfights with Israeli soldiers were taking place. In response, Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, characterized the actions of the Palestinian militant group Hamas as a declaration of war against Israel, with Israeli troops engaged in combat across various locations. Israel's military retaliated with airstrikes in Gaza, targeting assets of the Hamas terrorist organization within the region.

Hundreds of Gazans Flee Home

As a result of barrages of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel, hundreds of residents in Gaza chose to evacuate their homes, moving away from the border, as reported by AFP. Men, women, and children were seen carrying blankets and food items as they left their homes, particularly in the northeastern part of the Palestinian territory.
