Israel Hamas Conflict: Why did Rupi Kaur reject invitation from Biden administration for Diwali celebration

Canadian poet Rupi Kaur, who is popularly known for her ' Milk and Honey', rejected the invitation for the Diwali celebration at the White House by the Biden administration amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, which has claimed over 10,000 lives.

"I refuse any invitation from an institution that supports the collective punishment of a trapped civilian population. As a community we cannot remain silent or agreeable just to get a seat at the table. It comes at too high a cost to human life," said the poet in the letter she posted explaining the reasons behind the rejection.



As a Sikh woman, the "Milk and Honey" author said the holiday, known as Bandi Chhor Divas in the Sikh faith, makes her reflect on "what it means to fight for freedom against oppression."

In her letter, the author focused on the real essence and values of the Diwali celebration. She added that in various traditions from Hinduism to her own Sikh tradition, Diwali is about the celebration of righteousness over falsehood and knowledge over ignorance.

"I have always used this day to reflect on what it means to fight for freedom against oppression," said Kaur.

Along with rejecting the invitation, she has called upon others in the South Asian community to hold Biden administration accountable.

"Do not be afraid. Stand with the world and demand a humanitarian ceasefire. Many voices will join you when you speak. Let us sign petitions. Attend protests. Boycott. Call our reps and say-stop the genocide." said Kaur.

Diwali at the White House will be celebrated on November 8.
