With the debate over Social Security income in the US intensifying due to Elon Musk’s claims of fraud in the department, there have been a lot of questions about who can avail the benefit and how.

There have even been speculations about whether US President Donald Trump can avail the benefit.

Can Donald Trump avail Social Security?

Any American citizen who earns 40 work credits (with a maximum of four earned each year) and is at least 62 years old is eligible to receive monthly Social Security retirement benefits. This includes President Donald Trump.


While tax filings are usually private, it has become a tradition for presidential candidates and sitting presidents to release their federal tax returns, with some personal details removed. This practice began with President Richard Nixon over 50 years ago and has mostly continued ever since.

Donald Trump is the only sitting president who has not released any part of his federal tax returns since Nixon's era. However, some of Trump's tax returns, covering the years 2015 to 2020, were made public in December 2022 by the House Ways and Means Committee.

Trump's tax returns show no income listed under "Social Security benefits," which means that even though he qualifies for Social Security payments, he hasn't applied to receive them, as per USA Today.

A lot of retirees in the United States depend on Social Security income to cover their expenses. A survey in April 2024 found that 88 percent of retirees said they rely on this payment to help cover their expenses.

Recent estimates from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities show that in 2023, Social Security helped lift 22 million people out of poverty, with 16.31 million of them being adults aged 65 and older.

Do the Bidens avail Social Security?

Former US President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden are both currently receiving benefits from Social Security.

Their 2023 tax form shows that they received a total of $64,254 in Social Security benefits, which works out to $5,354.50 per month. A breakdown of this amount reveals that Joe Biden received $42,842 and Jill Biden received $21,412. This difference shows that Jill Biden is receiving spousal benefits, which are typically lower than the primary beneficiary's benefits.
