Twitter's former employee Peiter Zatko recently shed light on the alleged reckless cybersecurity policies of the social media giant. Twitter has major problems, which can cause a threat to not only the user but also the nation, democracy, and national security as well, Peiter Zatko claimed.
Peiter Zatko was the head of security at Twitter and directly reported to the CEO of the company. He was fired by the company in January as a result of poor performance. His whistleblowing comes before there were any indications of Elon Musk's involvement with the company.
Peiter Zatko alleged that major security problems are rooted within the system. A mismanaged environment is present wherein many members of the staff are allowed to access central controls and sensitive information without an adequate check, Zatko claimed.
Zatko claimed that senior-most executives of Twitter have been trying to cover up major problems and mention the possibility of one or more current employees working for a foreign intelligence service.

Peiter Zatko claimed that Twitter's poor leadership has led the board and government regulators into this security mess, which could become an attraction for foreign spying, manipulation, and hacking. Zatko claimed that users' data isn't deleted even after their accounts have been disabled. In some cases, this is because they lose track of the information, according to Zatko. An increasing number of bots is a growing problem, but the company doesn't have enough resources to either understand or fully resolve this issue, he claimed.
These bots reportedly led Elon Musk to back out of buying the company for a $44 billion deal.
Twitter's spokesperson clarified that security and privacy are the company's long-term priorities. The official also assured that clear tools exist which ensure a user's privacy, data sharing, and ad controls.
The spokesperson mentioned that access to specific allegations wasn't provided to them. Peiter Zatko's allegations just appeared opportunistic to them to capture attention and harm Twitter.
