Is this the most dangerous hacker in the world? All about the Chinese government-backed group 'Volt Typhoon'

The Volt Typhoon had infiltrated many US energy, water, telecommunications, and other vital service providers.

A cybersecurity company said on Tuesday that a Chinese hacking group had compromised multiple internet companies in the US and overseas by taking advantage of a software bug. Lumen reported that it determined the hacking campaign in the US and overseas was conducted by the purportedly Chinese government-backed organization Volt Typhoon.

Versa Director is an application to manage provided services for customers of Versa Networks company from Santa Clara, California. Hackers learned an unstudied vulnerability part of the Versa Director software by the Lumen Technologies’ researchers, in a blog post. It said that four US targets and one victim from outside the US had been located. The victims' names were withheld by Lumen, and an inquiry for more information was not immediately answered.

According to Lumen, there have been attacks since June 12. In an advisory released on Monday, Versa Networks acknowledged that an experienced group of hackers had exploited the vulnerability in at least one known instance and advised users to update their software to address the issue. In a blog post, Lumen stated that its researchers determined, with moderate confidence, that a group dubbed Volt Typhoon, purportedly backed by the Chinese government, was responsible for the hacking campaign.

The Volt Typhoon poses a serious threat to US cybersecurity officials, and China has stepped up its hacking efforts, according to Brandon Wales, the former executive director of CISA. It had infiltrated many US energy, water, telecommunications, and other vital service providers.
