Why Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day share a date
Columbus Day has been a federal holiday since 1892. According to Smithsonian Magazine, it’s marked across the country with parades that highlight Italian-American heritage and pride.Years of criticism over Columbus’s treatment of Native Americans led to a change in 2021. Then-President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation for Indigenous Peoples’ Day, set on the same date.
It isn’t a federal holiday. Some cities and states recognize it, and those places may observe both days or lean toward one.
