Kari Lake claims that FEMA lacks resources for American disaster relief. Despite that Humanitarian aid, federal funding to the migrants has not resulted in impacting the efforts of recovery for Hurricane Helene.

US Senate candidates Republican Kari Lake and Democrat Ruben Gallego had a discussion over the federal funding which was for the migrants of Arizona. According to The Arizona Republic, Kari Lake claimed that the funding system was too broke to help the affected Americans due to the allocations. However, this assertion made the misinterpretation of the way of FEMA funds developed the structure and the utilization.

In 2023, Congress established the Shelter and Services Program (SSP), which allocated $800 million with the aim of assisting the communities who were dealing with an influx of migrants and following negotiations, this funding got reduced later to $650 million for 2024, reported The Arizona Republic. This program develops the provision of the financial assistance to the local governments and nonprofits and it developed the ability of them for offering shelter and services to the people who were noncitizen migrants after the release from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Arizona Republic noted that SSP of FEMA does not work in diverting the funds from the disaster relief; however, it works on operating through a distinct budget which is separated from the relief fund of the disaster. According to FEMA, there are no issues that got detected from the initiatives to provide assistance to the migrants.

The opinion of Kari Lake also contradicts the official statement of FEMA to clarify the fact that funding for the disaster response will remain intact. With the continuous provocation of the debate, the understanding of the allocation of the federal funds plays crucial role in the information discussion on immigration and disaster recovery.
