Is Sydney Sweeney the next James Bond? Wild casting buzz sparks debate
Fresh speculation is swirling around Sydney Sweeney possibly stepping into the iconic role of James Bond, following a prominent Hollywood director openly backing the concept sparking debate over the future of the legendary franchise.

Director sparks casting conversation

The buzz received momentum after filmmaker Paul Feig, who worked with Sweeney on The Housemaid, endorsed her as a potential 007. Rather than watching her as a traditional Bond girl, Feig pushed for a more progressive and unexpected casting choice.

“I’d rather Sydney be the next Bond,” he stated, also citing, “There have been some cool Bond girls, but come on, let her be the super-spy, she’s great. She’s one of the hardest-working people I know, so professional, so smart, so savvy. I think she’d be a good spy.”

Sweeney’s own Bond ambitions

The Euphoria and The White Lotus star, 28, has also shown interest in the franchise, mainly after Amazon MGM Studios assumed creative control.

“I’ve always been a huge fan and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it,” she stated. When asked about playing a Bond girl, Sweeney further said, “Depends on the script. I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”

Her remarks have added spark to ongoing discussions about whether the franchise could take a bold fresh direction after Daniel Craig’s final outing in No Time to Die (2021).

Franchise shake-up and future plans

The Bond series is now undergoing a major transformation. Longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson have handed over creative control to Amazon as part of a major agreement, opening the door to new interpretations of the character.

The next installment is scheduled to be directed by Denis Villeneuve popular for movies such as Dune and Blade Runner 2049 with a script penned by Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders.

Other names in the mix

Despite the excitement around Sweeney, she is just one of several names connected to the role. Actors like Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Damson Idris, and Callum Turner have all been speculated contenders.

Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley was briefly rumored as a possible Bond in what later turned out to be an April Fool’s prank.

Actor Barry Keoghan also weighed in on the conversation, stating, “(James Bond is) an iconic role and a lot of weight and pressure comes with that. It’s nice to see your name go up there, but I don’t think I fit the criteria for James Bond. I’d rather come in and do the villain. The man teasing Bond, that’s more me.”

Rumor vs reality

While the idea of Sydney Sweeney as James Bond has fueled intense online discussions, there has been no official confirmation.
