Is Stranger Things hiding episode 9? fans debate the 'Conformity Gate' theory
Stranger Things final episode, “Episode 8: The Rightside Up,” streamed on Netflix on New Year’s Eve and ran for 2 hours 8 minutes. Some fans believe this episode was not the real ending, and that the happy ending might be an illusion created by Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). This fan theory is called “Conformity Gate” because the finale shows a forced happy ending, which goes against the show’s theme of breaking cycles and defying control.

Netflix and the show’s creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, have not confirmed any Episode 9, as reported by Yahoo Entertainment. Netflix will release a Stranger Things documentary called One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 on Jan. 12. Fans think Jan. 7 might bring Episode 9 because Netflix teased an event showing upcoming shows and movies.

Netflix teaser sparks episode 9 rumors

The teaser video said: “Sometimes, the universe shows you a sign. You can brush it off, call it a coincidence, but I know you got some questions. Lucky you, your future’s on its way, and even when you’re not working, it haunts you. So go on. All you gotta do is ask”, as stated by Yahoo Entertainment.

Jan. 7 is Orthodox Christmas, and all previous Season 5 episodes dropped on major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. The number seven is also important: in Season 1, Will Byers rolls a seven in Dungeons & Dragons. In the finale, the die shows seven again next to the Player’s Manual.

Fans point out Easter eggs and inconsistencies suggesting the finale might be fake. Vecna’s signature pose is crossing his hands; in the finale, almost everyone at the graduation scene had their hands crossed like Vecna. A prop dial at the WSQK radio station changed color from gray to red, which fans believe signals a character is in Vecna’s mind.

Fan theories and Duffer Brother's response

Some noticed Dungeons & Dragons binders of Max, Lucas, Will, Dustin, and Mike line up to spell “X A LIE” in a circulating image, hinting Vecna’s defeat might be fake, as noted by Yahoo Entertainment. Playing the episode back on Netflix shows the binders actually spell “X AILE,” which isn’t a word. Fans also question why Jim Hopper isn’t affected by Eleven’s death and why no one faces legal trouble after the conflict with the military.

The Duffer brothers confirmed there were no alternate endings: Matt Duffer said, “Oh no. I love when people do that, but I’m like, ‘How do you have the time?’ Oh my god! The energy to A, write it, and then shoot it. Are you crazy? No. No.” Fans can also look forward to Stranger Things: Tales From '85, an animated series, and a live-action spin-off about the rock that gave young Henry Creel his powers.
