Is Steam down? Thousands report widespread server outage

Steam, the popular digital gaming platform by Valve, seemed to encounter a major outage on Wednesday, December 25, 2025, with thousands of users reporting connection problems, according to Downdetector.com. More than 14,000 users flagged issues with the service, with several stating they could not connect to servers, access the Steam Store, or play games online.

The platform was also reportedly unreachable through Valve’s mobile apps. SteamDB’s unofficial Steam Status page indicated that the Steam Store, Steam Community, and Steam Web APIs were offline, showing a widespread interruption. The outage also affected online services and APIs for Valve games that included Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike 2.

Technical Details

The error, stated as a "Bad Gateway," typically happens due to overloaded Valve servers or failures in the content delivery network (CDN), often worsened when millions of users attempt to access fresh releases or seasonal deals simultaneously.
