NYC Snow Day: Will schools reopen Tuesday in New York? Here's what you need to know
New York City students are experiencing a rare traditional snow day after a powerful nor’easter prompted officials to cancel classes Monday. But as snow continues to fall and cleanup crews prepare to clear the streets, families are already worried about schools being open or closed tomorrow.

A blizzard warning remains in effect across all five boroughs, Long Island and much of New Jersey. With heavy snowfall and strong winds creating dangerous whiteout conditions, the decision to shut down the nation’s largest school district marked a significant moment.

Now, attention turns to whether classes will resume Tuesday.

Why were NYC schools closed Monday?

Mayor Zohran Mamdani made the call official Sunday afternoon, announcing there would be no school, in person or virtually, on Monday. The move came as a classic nor’easter threatened to bring 12 to 18 inches of snow to New York City, with some areas on Long Island expected to see up to two feet, as per a report by NBC New York.

A blizzard warning is issued when sustained winds reach 35 mph or more and visibility drops to a quarter mile or less due to blowing snow for at least three hours. Those conditions can create dangerous whiteouts.

Zohran Mamdani described Monday as the “first old-school snow day since 2019,” a decision praised by the teachers’ union. He added, “And to kids across New York City, you have a very serious mission if you choose to accept it: Stay cozy."

Are schools open tomorrow, on 24 February, in NYC?

With the heaviest snow expected to taper later Monday and cleanup efforts beginning, the decision for Tuesday will again rest with the mayor. Mamdani is expected to announce whether schools will reopen during the day Monday, just as he did for the initial closure, as per a report by NBC New York.

New York City ended traditional snow days at the start of the 2022-23 school year, opting instead for remote learning developed during the pandemic. While the system faced technical issues early on, officials say reliability has improved over time.

It took the city’s first potential blizzard in years to bring back a true snow day without online classes. Whether students can stretch that break into two days will depend on road conditions and storm cleanup.

Students have a day to “Stay cozy” as the storm moves through. By day’s end, families across the five boroughs will learn whether this blizzard brings a second snow day, or a return to routine.
