Is Russia planning to detonate a nuclear bomb in space? Here is everything you need to know

Russia had launched a satellite into space in 2022. Many suspect that it could be a nuclear weapon. This has raised questions pertaining to the nuclearization of space and its consequences.

nuclear bomb in space
The effects of nuclear weapons have been well documented by the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings. What happens when nuclear weapons orbit the earth from space? This question has assumed importance since Russia launched the Cosmos 2553 satellite in 2022, just before its invasion of Ukraine. Presently, no one with the exception of Russia knows what exactly this satellite does. A member of the US Congress recently highlighted a pressing national concern. Many took this as a warning regarding the Cosmos 2553. The consequences are terrible and the US has been working towards the adaption of a resolution in the UNSC against the weaponization of space.

Key concepts:

Many of the heavy satellites are placed in the geostationary orbit and they orbit the earth above the equator. Many of the communication satellites are placed in this orbit which is located approximately 22,000 miles from the equator. There are other satellites that are placed in the Low Earth Orbit. They are located at an altitude of less than 2000km or less. Many of the satellites of Elon Musk are placed in this orbit. Regional navigational satellites and weather forecasting satellites are some of them placed in this orbit.

Consequences:

In 1962, the US detonated 1.4 megaton nuclear weapon in space. This test was known as the Starfish Prime. The consequences were severe. It led to radiation circling around the earth along with electromagnetic radiation. At that point of time, there were 24 satellites in orbit and this test crippled nearly one-third of them. The electricity grid was also damaged.

In the present times, the disastrous consequences will only increase with the space being commercialized and satellites being launched almost every-day from different countries. Communication systems, flight radars, navigational satellites could be out of order if there is any nuclear explosion in space.

There could also be something called the Kessler syndrome.

FAQs:

What is the Kessler syndrome?
When space debris which rotates along with the earth bump into each other, it results in consequences which can cause massive losses. The collision can be an issue if the space debris enters the earth in the form of a meteorite.

What is the asteroid belt?
This is found between the planets of Mars and Jupiter. It contains rocks and other material including some irregularly shaped planets. They revolve around the solar system.
