Is Presidents Day a federal holiday in the US? When is it and what's open and closed?

Presidents Day is a federal holiday observed annually on the third Monday of February, and in 2026, it falls on February 16. Originally created in 1879 as a commemoration of George Washington’s birthday alone, it has expanded to honor all U.S. presidents over time.

While the holiday was originally observed on Washington’s birthday (February 22), it was shifted in 1971 to the third Monday of February. Presidents Day has been recognized as a federal holiday in some form since 1879.

Technically, the holiday is still called “Washington’s Birthday” in section 6103(a) of Title 5 of the United States Code, which marks it as a holiday for federal employees. The Colorado Department of Revenue lists it as a state holiday.
