A devastating blaze tore through the waterfront home of South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein in Colleton County on Saturday, October 4, leaving her husband, former Democratic state senator Arnold Goodstein, and other family members injured. While authorities continue to investigate the cause, the incident has ignited another kind of fire online, a wave of scrutiny surrounding Judge Goodstein’s recent rulings and criticism from Harmeet Dhillon, President Donald Trump’s nominee for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.

Dhillon had sharply rebuked the judge just weeks earlier, and the renewed attention has fueled speculation over Goodstein’s political leanings and sparked a broader controversy on social media.

Judge Diane Goodstein’s political affiliation

Diane Goodstein has served as a Resident Circuit Judge for South Carolina’s First Judicial Circuit since her appointment in May 1998, marking an extensive 27-year tenure and making the 69-year-old one of the state’s longest-serving judges.
Judge Goodstein does not have an officially stated political affiliation. Although her husband, former Senator Arnold Goodstein, is a Democrat, having represented South Carolina both in the US House and Senate as a member of the Democratic Party. Some have speculated that this links her to the Democratic side.

This public speculation grew further after a statement made by the White House Deputy Chief of Staff regarding left-wing political violence, in which he said, “It is well organized and funded. And it is shielded by far-left Democrat judges, prosecutors and attorneys general. The only remedy is to use legitimate state power to dismantle terrorism and terror networks.”

Criticism grew online because the official’s post and the fire incident at Judge Goodstein’s residence occurred on the same day, leading social media users to question whether there might be a connection between the targeting of so-called “Democrat judges” and the fire.

Judge Diane Goodstein is a conservative, AI chatbot says

In the meantime, a user recently posted an image showing an inquiry to an AI chatbot about Judge Diane Goodstein’s political leanings, asking, “Is Judge Diane Goodstein conservative or liberal?” In analyzing her judicial record, the chatbot classified Goodstein as a conservative. It referenced her 2017 South Carolina Supreme Court race, noting that she was expected to receive social conservative support after ruling in favor of a breakaway conservative Episcopalian diocese in a religious liberty case. The response also highlighted that, although her husband, former state legislator Arnold Goodstein, is a Democrat, this does not appear to affect perceptions of her ideology.

Additionally, the AI noted that recent rulings, such as her September 2025 temporary restraining order blocking the sharing of South Carolina voter data with the Department of Justice, have generated criticism from those who saw the move as obstructing federal oversight, further aligning her, in their view, with conservative stances on state sovereignty.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the fire incident.
