Is Gavin Newsom the future of Democrats? New survey sparks buzz
Gavin Newsom is getting attention as a possible future leader of Democrats during Donald Trump’s second term, based on a new survey. Around three-quarters of both Democratic and Republican insiders picked Newsom as their top choice to lead the party, according to a survey by Punchbowl News and LSG.

The survey questioned Washington insiders, including K Street leaders and senior Capitol Hill staff. The result has been consistent in three monthly surveys from October to March. Newsom has already been mentioned in many polls as a leading candidate for the 2028 Democratic primary. He has also given speeches across the country criticizing the Trump administration, which raised his national profile.

Social media attack

Newsom recently mocked Trump on social media by copying his posting style, which further boosted attention, as stated by Newsweek. A March poll from Emerson College showed Newsom’s approval rating improved to +2 points, up from −11 in December. However, his support among early voters dropped in another poll.

A survey by Saint Anselm College (March 16-18) showed his support in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary at 15%, down 9 points since November, as stated by Newsweek. Behind Newsom, about one-third of insiders picked Josh Shapiro as the next Democratic leader. Hakeem Jeffries and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez each received about 30% support.

2028 run talk

When asked about running for president, Newsom said he is considering it but family comes first . “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t considering it,” Newsom said about a 2028 run, as noted by CBS News. Newsom and Trump have clashed many times since Trump returned to office. The two leaders have not spoken since Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles for immigration enforcement.

During a Washington visit for wildfire aid, Newsom’s office said the administration refused him a meeting. In January, the Trump administration blocked Newsom from using the official U.S. venue at the World Economic Forum in Davos. This also stopped a planned interview with Fortune magazine.

Trump newsom clash

In March, Newsom blamed Trump for a global oil and gas price spike tied to the Iran war, as noted by Newsweek. He said Americans paid $1.5 billion more for fuel in one week. Trump responded by criticizing Newsom’s dyslexia mentioned in his memoir. Trump said he opposed candidates with “learning disabilities” and called Newsom “low IQ” and “dumb”.

Newsom fired back in a TV interview, calling Trump “historically unpopular” and predicting midterm losses, according to Newsom on Jimmy Kimmel Live via Newsweek. Trump again commented on March 17, repeating criticism about Newsom’s dyslexia, as per the Trump speaking in the Oval Office.
