The interview came in the backdrop of media reports suggesting that the 37-year-old was being forced out of Manchester United and the potential replacement for him would be Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix. Speaking publicly for the first time regarding the talks around his departure from the club, when Cristiano Ronaldo was asked if the United’s hierarchy was trying to oust him, the Portuguese footballer said, “Yes. Not only the coach, but the other two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed”.

In another claim indicating that the 37-year-old has grown increasingly weary of Manchester United's management, Ronaldo charged by saying that there has been "zero progress" at the club since its former manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 summer.

However, the Portugal talisman maintained his love for Manchester United. In the 90-minute talk with Piers Morgan. Cristiano Ronaldo, who re-joined the club in August 2021 and concluded as the team’s top scorer in all matches last season, noted, “As Picasso said, you have to destroy it to rebuild it [the artist's exact quote was: 'Every act of creation is first an act of destruction'] and if they start with me, for me, it's not a problem.”

"I love Manchester United, I love the fans, they're always on my side. But if they want to do it different… they have to change many, many things,” the player continued.

However, amid a turbulent season with Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo also talked about the lack of support from the team when he was going through difficult times in his personal life. Amid a flurry of explosive remarks, Manchester United has also issued a statement. Noting the world’s attention that his interview received, the club said that it would only respond officially after “the full facts have been established” and until then, they would focus on preparing for the second season.

Media reports, however, have claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo’s manner and timing of the interview left Manchester United “extremely disappointed”. While the 37-year-old opened up about his discontent with the club, he was successful in stressing that “I want the best for the club. This is why I come to Manchester United”. The club's official statements are yet to be published regarding Cristiano Ronaldo, the highest goal scorer in football history, and his future in Manchester United.
