After a lot of deliberation, Dr. David Strain believes that the coronavirus is making people sicker and has after-effects that we are unaware of now, media reports said. He believes the corona is a precursor to several other diseases. He treated a patient for the coronavirus some time back and saw him come back with a precursor to dementia in just six months, as per reports.

Dementia from COVID-19?

Dr. Strain recognised the patient and realised that the patient's brain had aged. He was just on the verge of dementia. Coincidentally, Dr. Strain was reading a study about brain shrinkage in people, who recovered from the coronavirus, media reports said.

Dr. Strain realised that the coronavirus has other effects once the patient is treated for it. He realised this could threaten the health system worldwide with ageing populations and insufficient resources. He believes we will face a big problem due to the effects of the coronavirus in the future, the reports said.

The after-effects

Initially, Strain thought the difficulty in accessing healthcare led to various illnesses. However, he realises that all these are after-effects of the coronavirus. Other serious illnesses can be a post-Covid effect. Dr. Strain sees the current situation as the opposite of the 1980s, when people reduced or stopped smoking. The damage level is equivalent to all those people taking up smoking in one go.

However almost none of the existing research has compared long Covid sufferers with people who have never been infected, making it possible that some of the health problems were not caused by the virus.

A new study published in The Lancet journal asked more than 76,400 adults in the Netherlands to fill out an online questionnaire on 23 common long Covid symptoms. Between March 2020 and August 2021, each participant filled out the questionnaire 24 times. During that period, more than 4,200 of them -- 5.5 percent -- reported catching Covid. Of those with Covid, over 21 percent had at least one new or severely increased symptom three to five months after becoming infected.
