Is Claude down? Claude outage hits thousands as users report problems- When will the issue restore?

Claude AI users are having trouble accessing the platform Tuesday, with thousands of reports appearing on Downdetector. The problems affect Claude Chat, while some users are also reporting trouble with the app and Claude Code.

Anthropic has acknowledged the disruption and said it is investigating elevated error rates across several Claude services. Reports of problems began climbing around 10 a.m. ET on Sept. 29, according to Downdetector.

More than 11,000 U.S. users had reported issues with Claude, while another count showed more than 12,000 reports by 7:34 a.m. PT, as per several reports by Reuters, PCMag and GV Wire.




Error messages have appeared for some users, including “Claude unable to authenticate.”

Anthropic's own status checker also acknowledged the issue. “We are investigating reports of degraded performance affecting claude.ai, platform.claude.com, the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. We will provide an update as soon as possible.”

Anthropic said that Claude AI, Claude Code and Claude Cowork were experiencing partial outages, while Console and API services were showing what the company described as “Degraded Performance.

When will Claude be back?

There was no expected timeline given for the outage to end. Anthropic began investigating the issue after reports started increasing, describing the problem as “elevated error rates” across Claude services.

The disruption appears to affect most of Anthropic's tools, with Claude for Government reported as the exception. For people trying to use Claude during the outage, the main issue is access to Claude Chat. Others are seeing problems with related tools, including Claude Code and the app. However, there is currently no stated time for when all services will return to normal.

The latest update, as per Claude Status, stated, "Most services have recovered as of 14:59 UTC. Signing in, starting new chats, voice conversations, Claude Code and Cowork sessions, purchases and file uploads are working again. Some messages sent between 14:00 and 14:59 UTC may not have been saved. We are monitoring closely and will post another update within 30 minutes."
