Canada has taken a direct approach to show Americans in "red states" a stark message regarding the effect of tariffs using digital billboards, as per a report.

Canada's Message

Strategically located on highways such as the Norwood Lateral in Ohio, the billboards feature a message from the Canadian government that states: “Tariffs are a tax on your grocery bill - Paid for by the Government of Canada,” reported Fox 19.

Why is Canada Doing This?

This strategy is part of an effort by Canada to “send a message” to Americans, according to Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly.

Joly told CNN in an interview that, “We’re doing that because we think that we need to send a message to the American people for them to understand what’s at stake because this is really going to hurt their livelihood and have an impact on their wallets,” quoted Fox 19.

The billboard will be seen in Ohio, Florida, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Nevada, which are the red states, meaning states that comprise mainly Republican voters.

A Call to Action for Americans

Canada's message is for hard-working Americans, Joly asserted that "talk to your senators, your house representatives, to your mayors, to your governors. Send a message that you don’t want these tariffs because nobody will win in this approach coming from the White House,” quoted Fox 19.

Economist's Perspective on Canada’s Strategy

Northern Kentucky University economist Janet Harrah claimed that this approach is unusual, however, emphasized that the marketing indicated the impact of US tariffs on Canada, reported Fox 19.

Harrah said, “The main takeaway for me is, for governments to be doing this, they’re concerned about the impacts of the tariffs on their country,” quoted Fox 19.
