Recent discussions surrounding health metrics have shifted focus from the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI) to the Body Roundness Index (BRI) while experts are certainly criticizing BMI for its limitations in accurately assessing health risks, reported The Telegraph.

According to The Telegraph, the NHS now advises measuring waist circumference alongside height while suggesting that a healthy waist measurement should be about half of one's height. Recent research indicates that individuals with a higher waist-to-height ratio are significantly more likely to develop heart disease.

BRI which is being developed in the year 2013 actually offers a more nuanced approach by evaluating waist and height measurements to provide a score that reflects body shape and fat distribution, asserted The Telegraph. Unlike BMI which does not really distinguish between muscle and fat, BRI actually aims to highlight the risks associated with visceral fat which is the fat stored around vital organs and which is linked to various health issues while including heart disease and diabetes.

A healthy BRI score ranges from 0.3 to 3 while higher scores are genuinely indicating increased health risks, noted the Telegraph. Several studies have shown that BRI is a better predictor of mortality and cardiovascular diseases than BMI.
