IRS Stimulus Check: Find out if you qualify for a $1,400 payment | Eligibility criteria

The IRS has been encouraging eligible taxpayers to file their 2021 tax returns as soon as possible to claim their stimulus payment before the deadline.

AP
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that millions of U.S. taxpayers may still be eligible to receive a stimulus check of up to $1,400, provided they meet certain criteria.

This payment stems from the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) on 2021 tax returns, which many eligible individuals either overlooked or did not claim.

The IRS confirmed in December that it would distribute approximately $2.4 billion in these stimulus payments, automatically crediting taxpayers who qualify based on their previously filed returns.

However, those who have yet to file their 2021 tax returns may still claim the amount, but they must act before the upcoming deadline.

Who Is Eligible for the IRS Stimulus Check?

According to the IRS and a report by USA Today, two key groups of taxpayers could be entitled to this stimulus payment:

  1. Individuals who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) on their 2021 tax return:
    • Taxpayers who left the RRC section blank or entered $0 may still be eligible for the stimulus payment.
    • The IRS has reviewed tax filings and is issuing payments to those who qualify.
  2. Taxpayers who have not yet filed a 2021 tax return:
    • Individuals who did not submit their 2021 tax returns may still be eligible for the stimulus check.
    • They must file their returns by April 15, 2025, to claim both the stimulus payment and any other potential refunds.

How to Check If You Claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit

Taxpayers who filed a 2021 tax return can verify whether they claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit by reviewing their tax documents.

If the credit was left blank or marked as $0, they may be eligible for the IRS stimulus check.

For those who are uncertain, checking IRS transcripts or tax filing records can provide clarity on whether the credit was included.

How to Claim the IRS Stimulus Check

For individuals who have already filed their 2021 tax return, no additional action is required.

The IRS began issuing automatic payments in December, and eligible recipients will receive:

  • A notification letter confirming the payment.
  • A direct deposit if banking details are on file with the IRS.
  • A paper check for those who do not have direct deposit set up.
However, taxpayers who haven’t filed their 2021 tax returns must do so before April 15, 2025, to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit and receive their stimulus check.

How Much Can You Receive?

The maximum amount eligible taxpayers can receive under this stimulus program is $1,400 per individual.
