To refurbish its idyllic but vacant islands on its western seacoast, Ireland has announced a refurbishment scheme.

It has offered grants of up to EUR 84,000 or USD 92,000 to those people who want to develop and refurbish vacant and derelict homes and live there. In the recently announced scheme, it has been made clear that owning a house does not guarantee the right to live there. But the government is concerned about the vacant houses on 20 islands and wants to refurbish these.

This scheme can be used also for renovating houses that have not been used for residence. It is funded by the Department of Housing. Local Government and Heritage. The scheme is part of a 10-year strategy for islanders. To avail of the benefit of this scheme, the house must have been made before 2008 and have been vacant at least for two years.
