According to Iranian news outlets, Iranian football legend Ali Daei said a plane flying from Tehran to Dubai had been rerouted and his wife and daughter were ordered off.

Daei, one of Iran's most famous footballers, said his wife and daughter had flown from Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates on Monday, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA).

According to IRNA, the flight from Tehran was ordered to land on the Iranian island of Kish in the Persian Gulf, where the family was to disembark. It was originally scheduled to arrive in Dubai.

Daei, 53, is a former Iranian national soccer team captain who once held the record for most international goals. He has been a vocal supporter of Iran's ongoing protests.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency stated that Daei's wife was barred from traveling earlier this month due to her support for the protests. It was claimed that she attempted to sidestep the ban illegally. His wife and daughter were not named in the reports.

However, Daei stated in comments published by the semi-official ISNA news agency that his wife and daughter were only going to Dubai for a short visit. He further added that they had no information about the travel ban on his wife.
