Iran Israel war took a dramatic turn after the US attacked key Iranian nuclear sites -- Iran's Fordow, Isfahan, Natanz. Given that it was the biggest Western military action against the Islamic Republic since its 1979 revolution, the world braced for Iran's response. Tehran has so far not followed through on its threats of retaliation against the United States - either by targeting U.S. bases or trying to choke off global oil supplies - but that may not hold. Any miscalculated attack from Tehran would amount to further escalation. Many people are now having apprehension about a possible World War III. Speaking in Istanbul, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said his country would consider all possible responses. There would be no return to diplomacy until it had retaliated, he said.

Strait of Hormuz, US Assets

Tehran's options included attacking US assets, closing the Strait of Hormuz -- a vital conduit for the world oil trade -- or even attacking energy facilities in the Gulf, which hosts several US military bases, Michael A. Horowitz, a geopolitics and security analyst, said, AFP reported.

If Iran attacks US bases in other countries, then America will also want to strike back. Many of those countries will see it as an attack on themselves, which could lead to a widening war, Foreign Affairs Expert Sushant Sareen said, ANI reported.

Sareen said that if Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz, from where almost one fifth of the world's oil passes, it will have a global impact. The economic fallout will affect all countries.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has categorically said that a move to close the strait would be a massive escalation that would merit a response from the US and others, Reuters reported.

Iran's Nuclear Card

Since Israel began its military campaign against Iran on June 13, some in Tehran have raised the prospect of withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to signal Iran's determination to accelerate enrichment, but experts say that would represent a considerable escalation and likely draw a forceful response from Washington.
