Why did Trump issue this warning?
The warning comes amid increasing concerns over Iranian threats against Trump and other U.S. officials. U.S. intelligence agencies have been tracking these threats for years, particularly after Trump ordered the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in January 2020. Since then, multiple intelligence reports have indicated Iran's efforts to retaliate. In November 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed that an Iranian plot to assassinate Trump before the presidential election had been foiled. Authorities identified Farhad Shakeri, 51, as the key suspect who was allegedly directed by Iranian officials to surveil and plan an attack on Trump. Shakeri is still at large in Iran.
According to U.S. officials, Iran has been behind several assassination attempts on American leaders in response to Soleimani’s killing. A recent FBI complaint revealed that Shakeri, an Afghan national living in Iran, had received direct orders from Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard Corps to plan Trump's assassination.
In July 2024, before a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, intelligence agencies received a security threat that prompted enhanced protection for Trump. During that event, an assassination attempt was made on Trump, resulting in a gunshot injury to his ear. While officials initially stated that Iran was not involved, they later found possible links between Iranian operatives and the attack.
What happens if Trump is assassinated?
If Trump were to be assassinated, Vice President JD Vance would take over as president. However, legal experts note that he would not necessarily be bound by Trump’s directive to “obliterate” Iran. Iran’s response
Iranian officials have denied involvement in the alleged assassination plots.
