International Customs Day 2023: History, significance and all you need to know

International Men’s Day is celebrated every year on November 19 to celebrate the contributions of men and to bring to focus the efforts taken for the welfare of men.

The inaugural International Men’s Day was held on February 7, 1992, by Thomas Oaster. In 1999, the day was celebrated by Jerome Teelucksngh, a history professor at the University of the West Indies, to commemorate his father’s birth anniversary.

Malta has had the longest-running celebration of International Men’s Day. The country has been celebrating this day since February 7, 1994.

International Men’s Day also coincides with Movember, where men avoid shaving and grow beards to raise awareness about men’s health issues such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer, among others.

International Men’s Day, celebrated in more than 80 countries, is observed to talk about several important topics related to men’s well-being and health and their sexual struggles.

International Men’s Day helps recognise and celebrate men and their contributions to society, community, nation, family, marriage and childcare.

For 2022, the International Men's Day theme is 'Helping Men and Boys'.
