With federal food assistance at risk due to the looming government shutdown, major delivery services are stepping up. Instacart, DoorDash, and Gopuff have announced special discounts and aid for SNAP recipients to help ease the burden on struggling families.

How is Instacart helping SNAP families?

Instacart announced on Friday that it will offer customers receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits a 50% discount on their next grocery order. The move comes as the federal government prepares to halt food aid payments starting November 1, as per a report by The Mirror.

The San Francisco-based grocery delivery giant said any customer who placed an October order using a SNAP/EBT card qualifies for the discount. Instacart confirmed that the offer remains valid even if the government processes the November payments on schedule, as per a report by The Mirror.

The company also revealed plans to triple its food bank support network from 100 to 300 locations through online food drives, representing a total of $5 million in direct assistance.

"As SNAP funding faces unprecedented disruption and food banks brace for longer lines, we're focused on practical, immediate solutions: helping families who use SNAP stretch their grocery dollars and helping food banks stock up to support their communities," said Dani Dudeck, Instacart’s chief corporate affairs officer, as per a report by The Mirror.

What are DoorDash and Gopuff offering SNAP recipients?

DoorDash and Gopuff have also joined the effort to support low-income households amid the funding freeze.

Gopuff, the Philadelphia-based delivery service, announced it will provide $50 in complimentary groceries during November to customers with a SNAP/EBT card linked to their account. The company has committed up to $10 million to fund the initiative, as per a report by The Mirror.

Meanwhile, DoorDash said it will waive service and delivery fees for roughly 300,000 orders placed by SNAP users in November. The company is also partnering with 25 grocery chains, including Sprouts, Dollar General, Giant Eagle, Stop & Shop, Winn-Dixie, BJ's Wholesale Club, and ShopRite, to eliminate these fees.

Additionally, DoorDash pledged to deliver 1 million meals from food banks at no cost, noting that more than 2.4 million of its customers already have a SNAP/EBT card linked to their accounts, as per a report by The Mirror.

How many people depend on SNAP benefits?

More than 42 million Americans rely on SNAP for basic food needs. While DoorDash disclosed its number of SNAP-linked users, Instacart has not shared how many of its customers receive such benefits.

Instacart began accepting online SNAP payments in 2020 and offers discounted memberships for SNAP recipients, along with free delivery on orders over $35.
