Inmate’s bizarre escape in a bag from France Prison baffles Authorities

French authorities have launched a nationwide manhunt after a 20-year-old inmate escaped from Corbas prison near Lyon by hiding in his cellmate’s bag, in what officials are calling one of the most audacious prison breaks in recent years. The escape, which took place on Friday, has raised serious questions about security protocols at one of France’s most overcrowded correctional facilities.

According to statements from Sébastien Cauwel, director of France's prison administration, the inmate exploited the release of his cellmate–who had completed his sentence–by concealing himself inside a laundry bag as the cellmate was leaving the prison. The escape was not discovered until the following morning, giving the fugitive a critical head start.

The man, whose name has not been released, was serving multiple sentences and is under investigation for organized crime, including suspected involvement in a double murder.


The French prison service has confirmed that an internal investigation is underway, and the Lyon public prosecutor’s office has also opened a formal inquiry into the incident. “He took advantage of the liberation of his fellow inmate to hide himself in his luggage and get out,” authorities stated, highlighting the calculated nature of the escape.

The cellmate, who was unaware of the plan according to initial reports, had just completed his sentence and was being processed for release when the escapee made his move.

Corbas prison, located in southeast France, has long struggled with overcrowding and staffing shortages, issues that are now under renewed scrutiny following this incident. The escape has shocked both the public and officials, with many comparing the scenario to a scene from a crime film.

As of Monday, the fugitive remains at large and a major search operation is ongoing across the region.

Authorities are appealing for public assistance and urging anyone with information about the escapee’s whereabouts to come forward.
