Officials have stated that earthquake activity has risen this week near a second volcano located in remote Alaska, indicating a higher likelihood of eruption. According to a news release on Thursday by the Alaska Volcano Observatory, seismic activity near Takawangha Volcano has been increasing in the last 48 hours and is ongoing.
The volcano is situated in the western Aleutian islands, west of Anchorage, and is approximately 5 miles from Tanaga Volcano. Earlier this week, scientists reported that Tanaga Volcano had also seen an increase in earthquake activity.
Following the intensification of seismic activity, the Alaska Volcano Observatory upgraded the alert level for Tanaga Volcano to advisory status on Tuesday, and on Thursday, they raised the alert level for Takawangha Volcano to watch status.

The observatory's analysts are closely monitoring the situation, as numerous earthquakes are happening every minute under Tanaga Island where both volcanoes are situated. The most significant earthquake recorded in the past 24 hours was a magnitude 3.9 located under Tanaga Volcano.

As of now, no indications of eruptive activity or unrest have been identified through satellite or other monitoring data. Although the island is not home to any communities, the city of Adak, approximately 65 miles away on another island, could experience ashfall if either of the volcanoes were to erupt. Aircraft flying between North America and Asia could also be affected if an eruption occurs, as volcanic ash can cause engine failure.
Previous eruptions in the region have produced ash clouds and slow-moving viscous lava, similar to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state in 1980. While there are no historical records of eruptions from Takawangha, scientists have found evidence of recent eruptions, and it's possible that past eruptions attributed to Tanaga may have actually come from Takawangha. The situation is being closely monitored by scientists.
