In Texas Heat, Snakes Shift Their Schedule
Snakes do not follow a set schedule. Their movement depends on the environment, especially temperature. In hot areas, they are active in the evening. In cooler places, they move during the day. This flexibility explains why snake sightings can see...

According to a study published in the journal Animals (MDPI), diurnal species of snakes can be nocturnal at times under specific environmental conditions. For instance, the grass snake is known to move at night more frequently than initially expected. Instead of asking about the active time of snakes, it would be better to examine the environmental conditions surrounding them.
Heat Plays a Bigger Role Than Light
The factor that determines the movement patterns of snakes is temperature. As ectotherms, snakes rely on heat in the environment for their physiological processes. Research in the Journal of Thermal Biology confirms that the behavior of reptiles is linked to maintaining body temperatures in the most favorable range. Thus, living in hot climates like Arizona and Texas, snakes tend to avoid direct sunlight and engage in active movements in the evening. The same tendency is reversed in the cooler climate, where snakes utilize the daytime to get warmer. This way, the snakes develop an adaptive pattern based on geography, season, and even temporary conditions.
This Changes How People Encounter Snakes
The ability to be flexible in terms of their activity patterns provides insights into why snake encounters seem so random. In certain regions, individuals may have more encounters with snakes during the twilight or nighttime hours, while in other regions, there is greater activity among snakes during the day. The use of telemetry research conducted in tropical locations has further revealed that large snakes do not follow a rigid schedule and are active throughout the day and night in varying conditions. The bottom line is quite clear. Snake activity depends on the environment rather than an internal clock. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
