Elon Musk has promised to honour the results of an online public poll that asked Twitter users if he should "step down" as the company's CEO.
Twitter CEO Elon Musk conducted a poll on Sunday, asking his millions of users if he should "step down" as the CEO of the micro-blogging website he bought in October.
Taking to Twitter, Musk tweeted the 12-hour poll along with a caption saying, "Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll."
Within an hour, the poll had received over four million votes. Different celebrities and businesspeople have responded differently to Musk's query. While Binance CEO Chanpeng Zhao urged Musk to continue, popular YouTuber MrBeast asked Musk to step down. At the poll's conclusion, 57.5% of respondents said they wanted Musk to step down, while 42.5% said they thought he should stay.
Nearly 17.4 million people participated in the survey.

While Twitter's support page suggests that users can no longer tweet posts from banned platforms unless they are also posted on both platforms, Elon Musk's tweet contradicts this policy. "Casually sharing occasional links is fine, but no more relentless advertising of competitors for free," he explains.

Soon after this, Musk stated in another tweet: "Those, who want power, are the ones, who least deserve it." Later, Musk cautioned, "Be careful what you wish for, as you might get it," in a statement that appeared to be addressed to those, who had participated in the poll.
Elon Musk had stated during the poll that "No one wants the job, who can actually keep Twitter alive. There is no successor." Since Musk still owns Twitter, it is unclear how much of the platform's daily policies would have remained under his control in the event of his departure.

If Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, steps down as Twitter's CEO and names someone else, presumably someone with experience in social media, it would be "significantly positive" for Tesla shares, according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. Since the year began, shares of Tesla have been down 57.35%. Since Musk bought out Twitter, the shares are down 29%. Ives said that Musk "self-inflicted" the damage in Tesla stock by selling shares.
